This year’s IIPCIC Workshop featured an interactive tabletop exercise based on the IIPCIC Task Force Model for Preventing and Combating IP Crime, focusing on operational and tactical level interventions.
Using the real-world threat of life-endangering counterfeit batteries, participants engaged in a simulated multi-agency response, sharing intelligence and practising hands-on enforcement scenarios using virtual reality (VR) technology.
The workshop emphasized intelligence-driven decision-making, inter-agency cooperation, and public-private partnerships, offering a dynamic simulation of how structured, scalable task forces can effectively respond to real-world IP crime threats.
The tabletop exercise simulated a real-world threat, where a shipment of 10,000-15,000 unsafe batteries was intercepted by authorities. Participants worked together in mini ‘task forces’ to disrupt the circulation of these dangerous products, navigating challenges such as strategic priorities, public-private cooperation, container inspections, raids, and media management.
The threat of counterfeit lithium-ion batteries is real, with devastating consequences, including fires, injuries, and fatalities. Global efforts to combat IP crime are crucial in protecting consumers and strengthening public safety.
